Two Bolt Flange Towbars
This type of towbar is the most commonly used towing bracket within the UK. The best known make of two bolt flange towbars is Witter, the largest towbar manufacturer based in the UK.
Most caravan stabilisers such as Bulldog, Snakemaster and Tando's come as standard with a car plate that fits this type of towbar. Accessories such as bumper protector plates, cycle carriers, and tow steps can normally be fitted to a flange towbar.
Swan Neck Towbars
Swan neck towbars are now becoming a more popular choice within the UK, but are more commonly seen in continental Europe.
Seen by many as a more aesthetically pleasing towbar than the more common flange towbar, problems occur when using stabilisers, as an expensive and intrusive adapter is more often then not needed. Bumper protector plates, tow steps and universal couplings cannot be fitted to this type of towbar.
Detachable Towbars
The least common of the three towbar types is the detachable towbar. Detachable towbars are growing in popularity due to the ability to remove them during periods when the vehicle is not being used for towing purposes.
This towbar type is useful for cars fitted with reversing sensors. Often a flange or swan neck towing setup will interfere with the sensors when not towing.
